Are You Buying a House or a Home?As you read and research buying a house, you will often find the words "house" and "home" used interchangeably. Keep in mind there is a psychological difference between a house and a home. A house for sale can be a place to sleep, eat, park your car, and put all your belongings. It is a material possession or an investment with little emotional connection. A home on the other hand, is where you feel safe, comfortable, warm, and protected. A house is where you live, but a home is where you live life. A house is something you buy logically, but a home is an emotional purchase. When buying a house (or a home) you have to balance your emotional wants and your logical needs. Most certainly there will be a time when both come into conflict with each other. For example, you may want a home with a view and near excellent schools, but the mortgage payment is higher than what you can logically afford. What do you do? Buy the house anyway and cutback on other logical or emotional expenses? Buy the house and get a better paying job? Buy another cheaper house in the same area but without the view? Make a large down payment to reduce the monthly payment? You get the idea. Be on guard when viewing the house, most folks get emotionally attached and want to buy no matter the cost. Later when making an offer, or worse at the closing, your logic may begin to take over and realize it is too much to live comfortably. This is buyer's remorse. The Balancing Act The trick in buying a home is to view all decisions with both a logical perspective and an emotional perspective. If a situation presents itself that requires a trade-off, decide on whether there is a major or minor conflict. Logic needs to win the major conflicts, but emotion should always be a factor, even winning the minor conflicts.
